The search for a Spanish based Autism information site geared toward parents proved much more grueling than expected. The typical main translated pages popped up—autismspeaks and autismsociety—but I wanted more! I pretended I was a blank slate with no knowledge of DSM-V this or Autism that and all of these sites were using language that would prove difficult to grasp in English so a mere “translation” without elaboration or further examples would not help me as a parent of a newly diagnosed child with autism. I was feeling rather discouraged until I stumbled upon Teleton.org.mx. Certainly, a site based in Mexico has its downsides—no immediate support or information for U.S. resources. However, I just wanted a site that explained to me, in Spanish, what I was up against in layman’s terms. I didn’t want to be bombarded with information and Teleton.org did a great job of offering a simple definition of autism as well as explanations of characteristics of autism like communication, socio-emotional, behavior and sensory integration.

The site is easily navigable with headlining topics provided on the left hand side ranging from basic information on Autism to parent manuals, events and news articles. In addition to providing a basic understanding of Autism and its characteristics the site also includes methods and services that parents should be familiar with including ABA, TEACCH, Sensory Integration and PECS. All of this information was not presented in an overwhelming manner on one page like many of the other sites I encountered but instead I was given the option to click on a link next to each description and icon and read about each as I pleased.

There is also an article posted every month that highlights new information and research as well as a new strategy that parents can put into practice. The strategies are relatable and helpful for the everyday parent. For example one months strategy was “Using Public Transportation.” Parents of children with an ASD struggle with behaviors and outbursts when traveling in a car because of rigidity and transitions so tips on how manage that behavior on a public mode of transportation would resonate with the parent population. Each article is formatted in a downloadable pamphlet in PDF file with images and step-by-step breakdown of techniques.

Overall, Teleton offers a wealth of parent directed information and helpful resources. The site is user friendly, incorporating symbols and explanations without being overbearing or scary. The site is easy to navigate providing images, PDF’s as well as an onsite Glossary. In addition to the general information parents would be seeking there are also event listings, a directory of organizations dedicated to Autism, as well as classes available for parents. The downside is that these organizations and events are mostly based in Mexico. However, most of the events are led by major organizations that have U.S. branches or networks so with a bit of research the resources can be found in the States. The organization also branches out to social networks including youtube, facebook and twitter. The major downside to the website is that it is not a United States based organization. Therefore the resource list is sub-divided into various areas of Mexico and does not list any for the United States. However, my goal was to find a site that would provide a plethora of non-overwhelming information about Autism and Teleton is informative, delivering tips, pamphlets, therapies, and providing parents with a better understanding of Autism.

Se resulto muy difícil encontrar un sitio de información de autismo en español para padres. Los paginas típico aparecieron traducido—autismspeaks y autismsociety—pero quería mas! Pretendí que yo era un pizarra blanco, sin conocimiento del DSM-V o autismo y todos los sitios que se presentaron utilizaban lenguajes que eran difícil de comprender en ingles. Los traducciones, sin elaboración o mas ejemplos no me ayudaría si de verdad era un padre de un niño recién diagnosticado con autismo. Me sentí bastante desanimado hasta que encontré a Teleton.org.mx. Claro, un sitio basado en México tiene sus desventajas pero yo de verdad quería un sitio que me explicaba, en español, lo que era el autismo en un lenguaje comprensible. No quería ser abrumado con información y Teleton.org hico un gran trabajo de ofrecer una definición simple de autismo y también explicaciones de las características del autismo como comunicación, socio-emocional, comportamiento e integración sensorial.

El sitio es fácilmente navegable con temas sobre el lado izquierdo que tiene información básica sobre el autismo y también manuales de padres, eventos y noticias. Además de presentar una comprensión básica del autismo y sus características, el sitio también incluye métodos y servicios que los padres deben estar familiarizados con como ABA, TEACCH, integración sensorial y PECS. Toda esta información no fue presentada de manera abrumadora en una sola página como muchos de los otros sitios que encontré. Teleton.org me presento la opción de seleccionar que información quería leer.

También hay un artículo publicado cada mes que ofrece nueva información y una nueva estrategia que padres pueden poner en práctica. Las estrategias son aplicable para padres que están luchando con varios obstáculos que se presentan con el autismo. Por ejemplo, una estrategia fue “Transporte de uso público.” Los padres de niños con autismo luchan con comportamientos difíciles cuando están viajando en un automóvil por las tendencias rigidez y dificultad con transiciones. Por eso los consejos sobre como manejar esos comportamientos difíciles en transporte público ayuda a los padres. Cada artículo está formateado en PDF con imágenes y técnicas descrito paso a paso.

En general, Teletón ofrece mucha información para padres y recursos útiles. El sitio incorpora explicaciones y símbolos sin ser abrumando ni dar susto. El sitio es fácil de navegar con imágenes, PDF y un glosario. Además padres también tienen acceso ha anuncios de eventos, un directorio de organizaciones dedicadas al autismo y clases para los padres. Lo malo es que estas organizaciones y eventos están basados principalmente en México. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los eventos se presentan por importantes organizaciones que también tienen eventos en el U.S. y con un poco de investigación, se pueden encontrar en los Estados. La organización participa en redes sociales como youtube, facebook y twitter. La desventaja principal es que no es una organización de los Estados Unidos. La lista de recursos se divide en varias zonas de México y no incluye los Estados Unidos. Mi objetivo era encontrar un sitio que presentaba una plétora de información sobre autismo y Teleton es informativo, entregando consejos, folletos, terapias y deja los padres con una mejor comprensión del autismo.
