English-Chinese review of: The Society For the Welfare of the Autistic Persons

Review by: Siu Man Woo, Special Educator & Hunter College Graduate Student

I would like to introduce a Chinese website for parents of children with autism. The Society For the Welfare of the Autistic Persons has a Chinese site to provide up to date Autism information that offers support to parents in Hong Kong. This organization is registered as a non-profit agent by the Hong Kong Government. There are also many enthusiasts/professionals who actively participate as members to facilitate conferences and workshops through this organization.

This organization can meet the purposes of the families of children diagnosed with and ASD through their website. The purposes of the organization’s website include arousing public awareness of autism, providing useful links to valuable resources, promoting educational advocacy for children with autism, and helping families of children with autism to overcome their challenges. The website is targeted towards families who are beginning to understand and come to terms with the diagnosis of and autism spectrum diagnosis in a child.

The website is easily navigated. First, this website provides a detailed section introducing the characteristics of, and challenges faced by, a child with autism, significant obstacles faced by children with the disorder, and strategies to teach and enhance learning and social skills, in order to educate the public. Everything on this website is written in very simple language, yet is detailed and easy to understand. The website also uses everyday examples to help parents to understand how to use the strategies suggested in a proper way.

The website also provides links to different organizations related to autism workshops, parent support groups, media reports and videos, suggested books and other reading materials, as well as a listing of family activities. Parents of children with autism can access all the updated information effectively and efficiently. The website uploads updated information about the special examination arrangements made for autistic students, and other relevant details and educational reforms that have been passed in connection with autism to parents as an important reference source. The website uploads the full version of “Understanding Children with Autism” handbook for parents of children who have just been diagnosed with autism. The handbook explains the process from first suspicions that a child has autism, to assessment, parental psychological adjustment, strategies for taking care of children with autism, responses to bulling, how to communicate effectively with school personnel and other resources. There is a blog area for parents to exchange their feelings and thoughts about the sight and offer advice and support to one another.

I would like to recommend this website for parents of children with autism because the presentation of the information is informative and easy to understand. Parents can get all useful information they will need to begin to understand and deal with a child’s diagnosis of autism from this website. Adding a comment area for collecting parents’ feedback or reflections will help the website to provide even more outstanding services. There is a saying, “it takes a village to raise a child.” Parents need a lot of help to raise and educate their child. Raising a child with special needs is even more difficult. It certainly requires the government’s commitment and the community’s involvement to effectively manage such a difficult diagnosis, and this organization and its website offer a stepping stone into a community of well-informed journeymen who have made such a commitment to aid those families affected by autism.
